Mechanical Engraving

Mechanical engraving - a rotary bit machine is used to cut away portions of plastic or metal to form the name and/or logo being placed on the plate or badge. a sheet of plastic with an upper and lower color are used. The engraver cuts thru the top layer exposing the second color on the bottom layer, thus for example giving you a red background with white letters. This normally leaves small ridges in the engraved area if it is larger then the bit being used.

Rotary engraving was the prevalent style of engraving until lasers came along.  It is still the preferred method for marking metal and engraving any item where exact depth or great depth must be achieved. Mechanical engraving has a distinctive appearance to anyone familiar with the two processes. The type styles used by the two methods, while sometimes named the same do not provide the same appearance.
